Visit the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam, the real home where Rembrandt lived and worked for nearly 20 years between 1639 and 1658. This carefully restored 17th century townhouse lets you walk through his living room, kitchen, studio, and students’ workshop, all furnished with period style furniture, household objects, and art pieces based on historical inventories. Inside, you can see an almost complete collection of Rembrandt’s etchings and many of his sketches, displayed alongside objects he loved to collect, such as Roman busts, weapons, and other curiosities that show his wide interests. These rooms give a vivid picture of daily life in 17th century Amsterdam and of how Rembrandt taught his pupils and ran what was once the largest painting studio in the Netherlands. The museum also highlights the dramatic turn in his life, from success and fame to financial troubles and bankruptcy, which eventually forced him to leave this house. Temporary exhibitions and live demonstrations of historic paint making and etching techniques explain how he created his works, focusing on his mastery of light, shadow, and human emotion and on his lasting influence on later artists across Europe.
